I WAS HAVING THE MOST amazingly erotic dream about Chayce when my mother shook me awake. “What?” I snapped. My eyes were heavy with sleep and I was annoyed.

“They found us, we have to hide,” she whispered.

“Who found us?”

“The vampires. They found us, and are stalking the house outside. We need to hide.”

I jumped out of my warm bed quickly. Trying to clear my sleepy mind, I grabbed my bag from under the bed. I spilled the contents onto the mattress. I slipped the cold leather of my gun holsters on my shoulders. I made sure to check my ammo. “Fuck hiding!”

“Lyrah!”

“We do not have time for you to correct me now, mother,” I cocked my gun back and a silver bullet slid into the chamber with a loud click. Chayce didn’t only watch over me in Greece. He taught me self-defense. I loaded another gun and grabbed a backup weapon. “Let’s kill some vampires.”

My mother was frozen in place. “I don’t...” Her body was trembling.

“Mother, snap out of it.”

“They’re going to kill us.” My poor mother had never hunted vampires before. My father was sure she never hunted or wanted for anything. She was always protected behind the walls of the mansion. I was a different story. He tried to keep me down but my resilience was a trait I inherited from him.

“We are all we have. We have to fight,” I demanded. I handed her a weapon. She held it like it was a fragile artifact. She had never handled a gun before. “Mother.” I grabbed her shoulders.

Glass shattered downstairs and my mother flinched. “I can’t do this. I thought Gage was watching over us.”

“Forget about him. He only cares about himself, remember?”

“Right.” She finally gripped the gun.

“Get your damn finger off the trigger,” I hissed. Her hands were shaking. I grabbed my boots from the closet and slipped them on. I slid my knife into the right one. I was sure I looked badass in black leather boots, tank-top, and panties. “When you fire the gun, try to aim for the heart. You’ll need this to sever the spine from the brain, and do it quickly before it regenerates.” I passed her an extra knife I had under my mattress.

“Lyrah,” she said, trying to resist me due to fear.

“Get inside the closet and don’t make a sound. I’m going to try and draw them away from the house.”

“You can’t,” she said frantically.

They were already inside the house. I could hear the furniture being tossed around downstairs. “I’ll be back. Remember, the heart.”

The chest was a much bigger target than the head. She nodded and I shoved her into the closet. I shoved my bed in front of my door, attempting to slow them down, before peaking my head out of my window. There was one vampire on the lawn below me. I jumped out of the second story window and landed on the balls of my feet. The vampire hissed at me and charged. I pulled my gun and barely touched the sensitive trigger.
